5. Create and Analyze Custom User Groups with Amplitude’s Behavioral Cohorts

  • Know what Cohorts in Amplitude are
  • Understand when you should use a behavioral cohort versus segmenting a user group in the chart builder
  • Create behavioral cohorts from a variety of locations in Amplitude
  • Utilize your behavioral cohorts to perform targeted analyses
  • Explore sample use cases for behavioral cohorts

What are Cohorts?

Let's say you want to focus your analysis on a specific, customized subset of users, such as users who attended a webinar you hosted last month or users who have spent at least $20 in your product in the past 7 days. To create those user groups, you can use Amplitude's Cohorts feature.

Amplitude defines cohorts as users who share a trait or set of traits. This can include events they've performed in your product or user properties they possess. Note that in the context of marketing, cohorts are often referred to as audiences, but functionally, they are the same.

With cohorts, you can create custom groups of users based on the actions they take in your product or based on user properties that they share.

Cohorts are a great way to:

  • focus your analyses on specific, custom user groups
  • compare user groups with each other
  • engage user groups with targeted messaging

Create Custom Cohorts

Cohorts can be created in several different ways:

1. Defined in the cohorts builder

    • "A or B"
    • "did not" perform an event/have a user property
    • refined event counting: relative count, total sum of property, distinct values of a property, historical count
    • The Cohorts builder can be accessed from the Create menu. The following video walks through how to create and save a new custom cohort.

2. Imported via CSV file

3. Saved from Microscope

Utilize Your Cohorts Within the Amplitude Platform

1️⃣ Use Cohorts in Charts to Perform Targeted Analyses on Specific User Groups

  • You can analyze and compare your cohorts within charts in Amplitude by segmenting by the cohort in the segmentation module.
  • For example, let's you work for AmpliTunes and want to know if users who engage socially (by either adding friends or sharing a song/video) have higher retention compared to All Users. You create the following cohort:

You can then add your new cohort as a segment in the Retention Analysis chart by following these steps:

2️⃣ Use Existing Cohorts to Define Future Cohorts

For example, let's say you work for AmpliTunes. You have created a cohort of users who signed up for your music streaming app in the month of February, which you used for targeted new user campaigns. It's now April, and you want to re-target members of that cohort who haven't played any songs or videos in the last 30 days for a re-engagement campaign.

* 리타겟팅 캠페인 ~!

* 마케팅 플랫폼(Braze)에 특정한 유저 데이터 보내서 리타겟팅을 위한 할인쿠폰 같은거 보낼 수 있는거 대박 ,,

Create a cohort of users who did NOT perform a specific event

Create a cohort of users who generated revenue in the last 7 days

ex) 지난 7일간 $20이상 결제했거나 혹은 지난 7일간 최소 5번 결제한 유저 코호트

-> 타겟팅하거나 a/b test에 활용가능
